Biography

Philip Lange was educated at University College School in London and during this time received private piano tuition from Tanya Polunin. He won numerous prizes at various competitive festivals, including a gold medal at the London Festival. He then studied at the Royal College of Music, as an Exhibitioner, with Maria Donska. Whilst still a student Philip made highly successful debuts at the Wigmore Hall and in the Purcell Room.

Philip’s concert schedule has taken him all over the world. He has made broadcasts on Radio 3, appeared on television, played in repertory theatre and shared platforms with divas as diverse as Rosalind Plowright and Dionne Warwick! Philip gave annual recitals in Mallorca from 2005 to 2014, organised by his great friend, the late BBC journalist Sue Lloyd-Roberts. He particularly enjoyed giving a concert at St. George’s, Brandon Hill in Bristol, home of many Radio 3 broadcasts and a recital at Sir Edward Heath’s former home in Salisbury raised a thousand pounds for charity. Philip plays regularly on cruises and featured in a BBC2 series A Parish at Sea (please see BBC page).

The late Sir Peter Pears inspired Philip’s love of accompanying. He accompanies students at the London music colleges and has a passion for English Song and Schubert Lieder. He is also Organist and Director of Music at St. Peter’s Church, Dorchester until the end of May. This post gives him the opportunity to further his love of sacred choral music.

Away from his professional life, Philip enjoys the theatre, walking, gardening and listening to jazz.
